בעבר הרחוק, כדור ארץ נכבש ע"י גזע חייזרים עוין העונה לשם "באגים". 70 שנה מאוחר יותר, תושבי כדור הארץ התאחדו לתאגיד אחד גדול על-מנת למנוע את השמדתם הסופית ממינים שונים של גזעי חייזרים שונים הכוללים טכנולוגיות ייחודיות. אנדר וויגין, נער צעיר אשר הופרד מאחותו האהובה, ונשלח לבית ספר צבאי בחלל, לאימונים אינטנסיבים כהכנה לתקיפה חוזרת כנגד החייזרים. עם הזמן אנדר מתגלה כחייל עם יכולות יוצאות דופן שיקבעו את עתידו של כדור הארץ.
